NABSA Launches Federal Advocacy Toolkit

by Odochi Akwani, Writer and Content Manager

The new toolkit offers guidance on how NABSA members can build community support, engage decision-makers, and shape policy.

Back in October, The North American Bikeshare and Scootershare Association (NABSA) released its Federal Advocacy Toolkit, a guide for its members to lead the way in their own communities. The toolkit comes at an opportune time as we’ve seen how recent hurdles have affected micromobility systems’ ability to take on community engagement, expansions, and more.

In April, I spoke with Craig Dittman, formerly the shared micromobility program manager for Bay Wheels in the City of San Jose. “We essentially got the rug pulled on a third of our money, so we have to figure out how to use other forms of funding or stretch our current funding so it can bridge that gap,” he shared.

Down in New Orleans, Blue Krewe, the city’s shared micromobility system, is also dealing with that uncertainty.

“Over the last couple years, our multi-year plan revolved around a specific grant coming through, and what that would mean for our system. It’s a very big shift in perspective and shift in knowing what to do next without that sort of clarity and stability,” said Interim Executive Director Leo Fraser.

It’s evident that folks in the shared micromobility industry, including system owners, operators, host cities, equipment manufacturers, and technology and service providers, may be navigating the same road blocks. It’s more critical than ever that the industry is at the table when decisions are being made around transportation funding, climate programs, and infrastructure investments.

This new guide from NABSA supports members with tools, templates, and strategies to strengthen their advocacy efforts and shape federal policy across North America.

The toolkit includes tips and resources on:

  • Understanding federal advocacy goals
  • Engaging decision-makers and partners
  • Working with local media
  • Practical tools and templates

The toolkit is available exclusively to NABSA members. Follow along NABSA’s Advancing Advocacy series for more updates and become a member today!
