Last week, North American Bikeshare Association and the Better Bike Share Partnership held a joint conference in Portland, Oregon: Moving Forward Together. Bike share groups, city planners, mobility justice advocates and transportation officials were among the conference attendees, where the week’s themes focused on how to design bikeshare programs to meet community needs (for all community members), how to mitigate racial profiling in bikeshare and how to engage community members who may not feel that bikeshare is for them. Speakers also addressed big questions: Should bikeshare systems be docked? How should rides be priced? How do you create marketing materials that are inclusive but don’t tokenize?
Here are some of the week’s highlights, as told from the Twittersphere:
Making my first time in #Portland a great one starting tomorrow. Excitement doesn’t even describe what’s about to go down! https://t.co/FsHweGka0M @go_nabsa @betterbikeshare #MovingForwardTogether2018 #bikeshareconference2018

It’s not enough to just use the word equity. You must embrace being a catalyst for change. Keith Benjamin is sparking a revolution at the BBSP/NABSA Moving Forward Together Conference. #BikeShareConference2018 #BetterBikeShare pic.twitter.com/hsBgZmjsJB

It’s sad that we have to implement education for how folks should deal with law enforcement in the case of being profiled (for being a POC). That being said, this is just the beginning of a remedy. #bikeshareconference2018 pic.twitter.com/nQSP2jqiXZ

“It’s not enough to hold engaging coffees to talk about equity. You have to put it in your strategic plan and around your boardroom table.” –@rkbtwo challenges #bikeshareconference2018 to institutionalize commitment and action. #MoveEquity

Analysis of trip data by @jumpbikes and Uber suggest that e-bikes are replacing vehicle trips.
Many #cities would like to see independent analysis of this data, but the early results are promising!@go_nabsa #NABSA2018 #MovingForwardTogether2018 pic.twitter.com/2Fa6TO1kzT
STUDY THIS SLIDE!!! from @BrownBikeGirl. Folks need no longer be confused about racial profiling. #BikeShareConference2018

More critical thoughts from @BrownBikeGirl at #BikeShareConference2018:
It’s not just tech innovations. Companies need to ask themselves what *social* innovations they are making to serve everyone. pic.twitter.com/TmOBckjD05

You know who is largely absent from NABSA? Transit agencies.
Bikeshare and micromobility in general helps overcome some of the biggest barriers to accessing transit. How do we bring these groups together more often?#bikeshareconference2018 @APTA_info @OfficialCTAA @go_nabsa

Equity in #bikeshare means coverage, right prices to suit trip needs, different things in different neighbourhoods, no delay in expansion to areas with poorest transport, engagement, adapted bikes, relevant marketing to translate the ridership #bikeshareconference2018 pic.twitter.com/MgTRlPvhjB

“What are you going to say you did for justice? For opportunity? For equity?” as a result of having been in this @go_nabsa conference? @barbchamberlain wants to know.
Rather, you need to know.#BikeShareConference2018
