There’s a growing interest within mobility justice organizations to ensure that equitable hiring and retention are active principles among all staff.

The Urban Sustainability Directors Network shared a resource last September that remains particularly relevant to the conversation. The resource is a thoughtful examination of hiring practices among sustainability and environmental fields, with suggestions for how to make such efforts more inclusive.

The guide covers hiring from recruitment and outreach to onboarding and retention and provides helpful sample language for the crafting of job descriptions, among other concrete tips.

USDN encourages internal reflection to be clear about what the goals of each position are, and whether specific degree qualifications are as important as, say, experience on-the-ground working with diverse communities. There are also a variety of helpful tips for how to try and avoid burnout among employees of color.
